We are starting a new session which is truly starting at the beginning. Thus, the students and scholars will be able to overcome the perception of Sanskrit as a written-only, “dead” language, and increase their confidence in actively using this language. The study of Sanskrit will become a lively and creative experience for the students and will also contribute to their understanding of the written language. The course is a unique opportunity to learn and practice spoken Sanskrit in a dynamic environment.

Instructor

Dr. Sadananda Das is widely known as an excellent speaker and experienced teacher of spoken Sanskrit. He has taught seventeen summer school courses in spoken Sanskrit at Heidelberg University, three at Lausanne University, and three at the Australian National University, besides five courses in advanced spoken Sanskrit at Florence University, at the Centre of Sanskrit Studies in Barcelona, at the Jñāna Pravāha Centre for Cultural Studies in Varanasi and at the Śādvala Centre for Sanskrit Studies in Goa. This year’s course will take place at Leipzig University for the fifth time. In the past eighteen years the course has attracted students and scholars of Indology and related fields from across the globe.

The Summer School will take place online because of Corona. You will work together with Dr. Das with the help of video conferences and Moodle (learning management system). For the video conferences you will need a microphone and loudspeakers or a headset. You will also need a fast internet connection.

Prerequisites: Knowledge of English and basic knowledge of Sanskrit (at least 4 semesters) as well as the ability to read Devanāgarī script. The course will be taught in Sanskrit.

Timetable: Classes from 10:00 to 16:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10:00 to 13:00 on Wednesday and Saturday. Please note: The time table is based on local (german) time.

Course fee: 390.00 EUR. This includes 82 units (45 minutes each) of instruction and the teaching materials.

Procedure:

  • After you have applied for the course, the instructor, Dr. Sadananda Das, will inform you whether you are accepted.

  • Please note that your registration is valid only when we have received your payment by 31st of May.
  • You'll be informed by 7th June whether the course will take place.
  • Should we have to cancel the course for lack of participants, we'll refund the course fee by 30th of June 2021.

BeginnerLevels are for absolutely Beginners. You do not need any backgroundin Samskritam to start learning. We teach you from the basics. Eventhough a language has to learned through speaking, we also make aneffort to teach you the alphabet at the start. There are 3 sub-levelsin this. Each sub-level takes you to a higher level of learning andunderstanding. This course (Beginner Level – 1) is ideal for anyone from 5 years and above. This sub-level has a duration of 3 months( 12 weeks) consisting of 10 lessons. For students from 5 years to 10years, one parent must be present in the class. What more, even theparent will learn.

  • 10 Lessons - Writing, Reading Samskritam Alphabet, Gunitaksharas (Consonant and Vowel Conjunctions)

  • 12 Slokas (Prayer slokas, Shanti mantras - Chanting only)

  • Bhagavad Gita Chapter 12 – Slokas 1-5 (Chanting Only)

  • 50 Vocabulary Words (Spoken and Identification only)

  • 10 Daily Conversation Sentences (Spoken Only)

Duration

  • 12 Classes / 3 months ( Every Saturday )

  • Attendance of atleast 11 classes is mandatory and a prerequisite for taking final evaluation.

Pre-Requisites

  • One parent must be present for students between 5-10 years of age

  • First Class will be Orientation and Kick Start
